Only a week away from the KC Regional Quilt Fest!!
After almost 2 years of the 14 sponsoring guilds working on the 2nd KCRQF, and almost a year of designing, sewing and quilting on the part of this quilter--it's HERE! Next Tues and Wed the Miami Co. Quilters' Guild will start the process of hanging over 700 quilts. Vendors, including the Miami Co. Quilters' Guild, will be setting up booths on Wed also. Enormous numbers of volunteer hours go into this huge show--hopefully all of you will be there!
I got brave with this show--despite having entered and winning ribbons at our local guild show (which is Sept. 23-24 at Paola Middle School, Paola KS), I'd never entered a show that had a paid judge until now. I've entered the Ricky Tims Kool Kaleidoscope inspired quilt into the Showcase/Display Challenge. With approximately 20 entries, 2 will be choosen to be in the display case, although all will be hung. I had lots of problems with this quilt from the "get go", but I really learned a lot, too! Black quilts for a show may have problems with keeping the lint off; and when you plan to do lots of intensive, modern quilting, more than 2" of extra quilt is needed for the "quilting shrinkage". (there was a very rigid size requirements).
I also entered a quilt into the judged category--the "We are all the colors of the world" wholecloth. Now I really learned so much with that one! First I used RJR Radiance, a cotton/silk blend, and since this was totally an original design, it made me stretch my skills. I liked the outcome, especially the consistency of the binding (watch! the judge will probably ding me on that! Ha!)--and I'm not going to reveal the "issues" I know this quilt has (as does every quilt). But no matter how I do, I really look forward to getting back the critique sheet on it.
in the meantime, here's one of the quilts I've entered into the guild displays at KCRQF. My sister, Lee did the embroidery work and I did the rest.
